Headwind won’t stop us!

Date: 09-04-2010
Day 62: Wudinna, SA
Distance cycled: 103km

How good does it feel to be sleeping on a bed again?! The weather was no different to the days before: cloudy. We were ambivalent if we should move on to Wudinna or rest in Kimba. After a morning walk and getting assistance with weather forecast for the day at the visitors centre, we packed up and on the road we go again. As long as there is no thunder or lightning, we felt comfortable riding even if it rains.

We left Kimba with some strong headwinds (again?!) We took turns to take wind shelter from each other and made progress slowly.

In one of her emails, a good friend wrote, “Isn’t it amazing how you automatically have a ‘connection’ because you’re all travellers?” It IS amazing! While we do get much support from passers-by, many enthusiastically and frantically waving us by are caravaners, campers or travellers themselves! We have spoken to many travellers driving from Perth to Sydney, Adelaide to Darwin, Brisbane to Broome etc and in some way, we have a connection. In any case, they have driven the distance and we all understand how LARGE Australia is to be driven (let alone cycle) across.

We arrived in Wudinna famished as usual. It was tempting to get a bed to sleep on again but the only cabin at the caravan park was not vacant. So we set up our tent on the ‘lawn-less’ ground. Given the draught and water restrictions, we can only expect to more camp sites as such. Well, the solid surface is good for our backs, isn’t it?

  1. You wonder about the headwinds? Now you got out, why you only meet cyclists, travelling eastward from Perth to Sydney... thousands of km without stepping on the pedals ...
